WOOD PROTECTION AND DECORATION
Products for painting and protecting parquet, floors, wainscoting, fences, rafter framing and other wooden and wood-based elements

Protecting wood against external factors that have a deteriorating and damaging effect consists of coating it with paints and varnishes that create a homogenous coat impenetrable for air and humidity on its surface. If this coat covers the rings on the surface of wood, we are speaking of paints, if the growth rings are visible then it is a varnish or stain or varnish-stain. The difference between varnishes and paints consists in the fact that paints contain less resin and more fillers - they produce a thick coat that eliminates any irregularities of the surface and are usually used as base coats. Whereas varnishes are usually used as the top coat and contain more resin with better parameters, like gloss, than paints.

VARNISHES
The ŚNIEŻKA portfolio distinguishes two product lines: SUPERLAK and IMPREGON, mainly intended for wood protection and decoration. The first contains base coats and varnishes the second one consists of impregnating compounds, varnish-stain and oil varnish.
Varnish products (transparent, i.e. leaving the growth rings visible) create different types of coats. Depending on the types of resin used for their manufacture they have different parameters. Alkyd resin based varnishes: oil, oil-phthalic, phthalic are resistant to external conditions, especially UV radiation (SUPERLAK OUTDOOR OIL VARNISH). Unfortunately such paints are not hard or abrasion-resistant, therefore, they can be used only for painting different types of wooden surfaces not exposed to direct and excessive use (wainscot, windows, doors, etc.).
High hardness and abrasion-resistance is the domain of polyurethane varnishes, which due to their high durability can be used for painting intensively used wooden surfaces: floors, parquet, etc. They come in two types: two-component, where the coat hardening consists of a chemical reaction between two compounds (SUPERLAK TWO-COMPONENT POLYURETHANE VARNISH) and single-component – hardening takes place by binding the humidity from air. (SUPERLAK SINGLE-COMPONENT POLYURETHANE VARNISH)
A special case of painting wood is the painting of floors made of parquet blocks or floor boards. Polyurethane varnishes cause strong darkening of wood directly after the painting. This can be avoided by using a cellulose primer varnish, which improves the adhesion of top coats and insulates the wood from the direct influence of polyurethane varnish. This undesired phenomena can be further limited by using water soluble base coat varnish manufactured on a base of acrylic resin (SUPERLAK ACRYLIC GROUND COAT). An additional benefit of using this type of product is the elimination of unpleasant solvent odour.
Fast development of chemical technology enabled using acrylic resins for manufacturing water soluble wood varnishes. Such products do not contain harmful organic solvents. Water soluble varnishes (SUPERLAK ACRYLIC VARNISH), unlike solvent-based varnishes, do not cause darkening of light wood, however their durability parameters are inferior to solvent-based varnishes for similar applications.
Therefore, the selection of a proper varnish for painting wood must mainly depend on the type of surface we are going to cover.
VARNISH-STAINS AND IMPREGNATING COMPOUND
Significantly thinner coats are applied onto the surface of the wood using so-called varnish-stains and stains, whereas in the case of the later we are rather talking about dying the wood not painting it. Depending on the type of binder (resin) used, they can also be used outdoors. Because these products penetrate into wood pores, they often contain special agents, so-called biocides, which protect against fungi-related diseases (IMPREGON VARNISH-STAIN).
The so-called protective-decorative impregnating agents (IMPREGON IMPREGNATING COMPOUND) constitute a completely separate group. They are mainly intended for outdoor applications. They do not produce a coat on the surface of wood, thus there is no risk of coat flaking. Impregnating compounds contain specially selected wide-spectrum fungicidal and insecticidal agents that protect against so-called biological corrosion. This is a three-stage wood decomposition and deterioration phenomena: the first stage is the decomposition of wood (its compounds) under the influence of sunlight, UV radiation specifically, the second stage is caused by all types of mould- and fungi-related diseases. The third type of wood corrosion is the result of technical pests – all types of insects feeding on raw wood.
Complete coating of wood, without visible growth rings can be achieved using oil-phthalic paints available in a wide range of colours, alkyd paints or acrylic paints. These paints can be used both for indoor and outdoor protection of wood. When painting floors use specially modified paint with increased abrasion resistance. For improved protection of wood against any fungi-related diseases developing due to humidity, use transparent IMPREGON IMPREGNAT decorative-protective impregnating compound as the base coat for the paint. It will act as a protective coat for the inner layers of wood, and the homogeneous and impenetrable top coat will protect wood against humidity.
